This early succesional grass establishes quickly in a prairie and seeds the first or second year. A great cover crop species for establishing a prairie. The nodding seed heads are very attractive and attract wildlife. One of the first species to colonize sandy shorelines and dunes.

Other traits: Wildlife, Edible, Canada Wild-rye also grows along stream banks and woodland edges and is a good forage plant for livestock, deer and birds. It also provides shelter and protection for wildlife. Native Americans also used wild rye as a food source. Well suited as a cover crop.
